My grandparents visited Greer in the 1920's - My parents honeymooned there in 1948 - We started coming up regularly in 1960, stayed at Wiltbanks every summer until we built our own place in Crosby Acres in 1983. Heartbreaking! A cabin can be replaced, but it will be a long time before the most beautiful place on earth recovers....

Tracy McCormick Ours is in Crosby Acres, too. My dad started building in the late 70s. Yes, a cabin can be replaced. Thank goodness for insurance. My fear is that nobody will want to rebuild on charred land, no trees, no forest. Greer would be gone and I don't think it would come back. :(

My parents are also in Crosby Acres. My Grandparents, the Tribers, bought the little one-room cabin on the corner and expanded it as we spent our summers there, riding horses in the meadow across from Molly Butler's, going there for the bes...t ribs I've had to this day, hiking all over Hall Creek and up the cinder mountain, walking all over Eager (by myself because it was SO safe!) After Grandpadaddy (John Triber) died, my parents, Chuck Clifford C. Collup and Gretchen moved there to rebuild it to their full-time home and have planted all four feet firmly in the community. My sister and I look forward to possibly retiring there one day. We lost my Grandpalady (Billye Jean Triber) less than a year ago, now Mom may be in danger of losing their home. I have such a knot in my stomach, I can't even tell you!

(Mom, Dad, dogs, and RV are currently in Mesa, BTW, and ravenous for any info I can report off the web.)See More

Melanie, the best information we have now is that no fires have been detected in Greer as of yet, according to the satellite fire detection system called MODIS. Fire was rapidly advancing from the south up the east fork, as well as encroach...ing from the north near Heaven Scent Cabins, all afternoon. The fire was threatening to crest the entire eastern ridge, really. It has since slowed down considerably. Greer is not out of the woods yet, but for right now it is not burning.See More

The Google Earth fire detection and intensity sensors are showing low temp fire 1/3 mi E of the Tin Star, and 1/2 mi S of the Red Setter Inn. higher intensity fire E and S of the fire lines. not detecting fire E of the main road yet. perhaps if there are FF's on site, if the winds die as expected, the cool air settles in and the meadown and lakes do thier jobs, the damage will be contained to the East side of the town.

He'd have lost it 5hours after power outage if that were the case. So thi...s morning we must have all lost our web cams and phone lines to a phone switch outage. But if we have power that means things like pumps from wells and sprinklers systems will work (mine is on)See More

#Matt Finch:
Big update. There are 2 engines posted up by Pete's Flume so I went and talked to them. First, some bad news. He was in Nutrioso last night and lost 2 homes that he personally fought, keep Nutrioso and Alpine in your prayers, the fire won't... seem to le...ave them alone. South Mountain in Alpine, arguably the prettiest peak on the mountain, has been nuked, so has one side of escudilla. Some good news though, he said it isn't a total loss up on top. There has been massive damage, yes, with a lot of nuking, but there are also a lot of areas where he said it looked like a slow burn went through, almost like a controlled burn. He hasn't made it to the big lake area, but let's keep our fingers crossed it was slow up there. He showed me the map of the lines they are making around town, the dozer lines and areas they plan to burn. Good news, the fire in grapevine above 26 bar was a spot fire that took off, it hit the dozer lines they made, and the lines held. That spot fire is under control, no homes lost. They haven't been able to back burn anything above 26 bar to point of the mountain unfortunately. So any fires seen yesterday evening were spot fires, and the fire coming down water canyon is part of the main fire as well. They tried backburning last night, but the temperature dropped and it was unsuccessful. He said mother nature is working directly against them. It is hard to burn lines at night because the temperature drops don't let the fire go far, then during the day the winds make it too hazordous, so they are relying on dozer lines more than fire. He said the same thing happened last night with the sipes line. The temperature drops didn't let the back burn go very well, so they are bringing in additional dozers this morning to widen the line that way. The are making a dozer line from the forest service service station just a hundred yards south of Haws park and taking it frm there to the Big Lake highway following private property boundaries. They can't touch private property because of liabilitys until it is on fire, but they can't do preventative like cutting trees, etc. without homeowners permission. The spot fire last night came within 1/2 mile from school bus road, among houses but none lost. They are doing great work and he said they have loaded the area up with personnel and machinery. Bad news now, the main wall hasn't come down, but is only a few miles out, still around the brown sawmill area coming down. Winds are already really picking up and because of the slow backburn last night the line above Amity hasn't really been established or widened, now it is up to the dozers. He said he was from the Payson area and has been in this position before, so he wanted to be honest and straightforward. He said it is his opinion that they will lose some structures today because the wind is just too strong and it is moving too fast. He doesn't think anything North of School Bus has much to worry about, but they are concerned with the areas above 26 bar in the Spanish Trails, Elk Crest area. On a positive note, he also said around Alpine and Nutrioso he has seen the best work he has ever seen fighting this thing and protecting houses, so the best of the best are on it. It should have been a lot worse as far as structures lost goes, but they have worked miracles. So, the area is in the most capable hands, but this is a raw show down between man and Mother Nature, so let's pray for divine interventionFinch: See More

Still waiting for news and it's still 0% containment. Eagar has been evacuated as of last night any many families are with us in Pinetop area. Greer is in okay shape at this point. We'll head over to the shelter for an update soon.

News conference just described the efforts in GREER. They have "structural" protection in place (multiple engines) and multiple personnel in town working residence, moving wood piles and other things to make it easier to fight a spot fire if they come. I am SOOOOO IMPRESSED I could cry. It's been a long week, already.

At least we have each other

#Victoria Barger Lomay
It is killing me to see this wonderful little community threatened. So much of my youth was spent up there running around on horseback, taking out trail rides from the stables for Jerry Crater, cleaning cabins at the Amberian for the Petroff's, working my mom's shop, the Quacker Barrel, either in Greer or Eagar, etc. Our family and ...so many other's so love this town and really have roots there, as do so many others I am sure. My heart breaks for the residents and summer residents that have a business up there and depend on it for their livelihood and whose homes are their retirement dreams or summer escapes. Greer is truly a piece of heaven on Earth and it would be a travesty to see it any other way but the pristine beauty it offers it's visitors and residents.
A very heartfelt and immense appreciation goes out to those protecting our lovely little town and surrounding communities, there are no words that can express my sincere thanks to who you are and what you do. Thank you to the men and women that are risking their safety to fight this beast, thank you to the people so kind to offer other's in need a hand or a place to stay and thank you Greer for all of the lovely memories. With much love, Vicki Barger LomaySee

Tuesday morning and by the grace of God, Greer still stands. Pretty smokey in town but the fire did not cross into town last night as it laid down a bit due to higher humidity ad lower winds. Thankfully, there are no losses to report and we... remain optimistic - although we are not out of the woods quite yet. In the meantime, fire crews continue to focus efforts on the community of Greer, which is under a voluntary evacuation alert. Brad Pitassi, a Southwest Type 1 incident management team spokesman, said the community currently resembles a "ghost town."

The blaze was 8 miles from Greer on Saturday. If flames come within 6 miles of the town it would trigger a full-scale evacuation.

Fire crews completed a 30-mile burnout operation from Nutrioso to State Road 261 to protect Big Lake and Greer, said Kelly Wood, a Type 1 team spokesman.
